What is PRP Treatment?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous plasma concentration with a higher count of platelets in whole blood. The effectiveness of PRP is attributed to the growth factors released from the platelets. PRP has gained attention as a promising treatment for hair loss. During the procedure, your scalp will be numbed, and sometimes a micro-needling step is included, where superficial incisions are made along the thinning hairline. The platelet solution is then injected into these incisions.

Who Should Opt for PRP?

PRP is beneficial for individuals with thinning hair, those with androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness characterised by hair loss at the top of the scalp and a receding hairline), and women with male pattern alopecia.

Are the Results of PRP Guaranteed?

Preliminary studies suggest that patients may respond positively to PRP therapy. Some hair restoration surgeons recommend PRP treatment for patients who are not candidates for surgery every three to four months. Other protocols use PRP before or during surgery to enhance graft survivability. PRP is emerging as a non-surgical therapy for stimulating natural hair growth in thinning areas. Although larger clinical studies are pending, current literature and anecdotal reports show promising results.

Who Should Not Have PRP Treatment?

PRP treatment is not suitable for individuals with a history of heavy smoking, drug and alcohol use, or medical conditions such as platelet dysfunction syndromes, thrombocytopenia, hypofibrinogenemia, hemodynamic instability, sepsis, acute and chronic infections, chronic liver disease, chronic skin diseases or cancer, metabolic and systemic disorders, and those undergoing anti-coagulation therapy.
